Nicola's best friend, next-door neighbour and brother-in-law, Shane, asked her out. She said 'no', because she's always thought of him as a brother. When he accidentally drowns following her perceived rejection and his family blames her, she moves out of home, to board with Piers and Casey Bowman. She is attracted to Jerome, their 19-year-old son, who could have been the model for the Adonis she painted in her art class. However, she tries to avoid Jerome because he is younger than her, and because she beleives he could never like her that way as she is too fat. Meanwhile, she is struggling with grief over Shane's death and her feelings of guilt that she may have contributed towards it.Jerome has been inspired by a book to become a missionary, so is living at home and working to save up. But he is annoying his family by his single-minded focus on his goal and hero - a missionary who bought happiness to the life of others by small acts of kindness. He is also struggling with an attraction to Nichola, which his mother has noticed and warned him against. A friendship with Michael, a troubled teenager he works with, is the catalyst for some changes.
I know I'm going to enjoy re-reading this, and picking up more details each time. For this time, I really enjoyed the story, the way the characters grew as the novel progressed, and the way they are flawed, likeable and realistic people. Paula Vince doesn't do saccharine Christians, just real people facing real issues in the real world, and learning something in the process.
Although this is a stand-alone novel, it reintroduces characters from The Risky Way Home (the story of Piers and Casey, which I've read and enjoyed) and Picking up the Pieces (Michaels' story, I think, which I haven't read). Not knowing the backstory does not affect enjoyment of this novel, though it may inspire you/me to get the previous books. In case you're judging the book by the cover, dont' worry. The heroine is an art student who lives near the ocean and has is self-conscious becuase of her 'generous' figure. So the cover fits perfectly. Try and see.
